Real Madrid are back in the Champions League, and apparently, they’ve decided that winning comfortably is for ordinary football clubs.
On September 8th, José Mourinho’s men kicked off their European campaign with a 2-1 victory over Inter Milan at the Santiago Bernabéu, surviving a late scare after building a two-goal lead. Kylian Mbappé and Federico Valverde got on the scoresheet, while Carlo Augusto gave Inter hope of a comeback.
It was an entertaining night of football, featuring spectacular saves, defensive disasters, and enough missed opportunities to make both managers consider taking up a less stressful profession.
Mbappé strikes first
Inter, of course, started brightly, putting pressure on Madrid and creating some dangerous opportunities. Thibaut Courtois was forced into action early, reminding everyone that being a goalkeeper for Real Madrid is less of a job and more of a permanent audition for superhero status.
But in the 14th minute, Madrid struck.
Brahim Díaz capitalized on a defensive mistake and slipped the ball to Mbappé, who finished clinically to make it 1-0.
Inter had been enjoying plenty of possession, but apparently nobody told them that possession doesn’t count as a goal. You can pass the ball around all evening, but eventually you have to stop treating it like a family heirloom and do something with it.
Mbappé, meanwhile, continued his Champions League scoring exploits. And judging by his demeanor, the French superstar clearly considers Europe’s biggest competition his personal playground.
Yet from the Inter defenders’ perspective, that goal was the footballing equivalent of leaving your front door unlocked and discovering that a world-class burglar has moved into your living room.
That couldn’t have been fun.
Valverde makes it two
Nine minutes later, things got even worse for Inter.
Federico Valverde pounced on a disastrous mistake by goalkeeper Josep Martínez, who attempted to play out from the back and ended up handing Madrid their second goal.
Valverde needed little encouragement to take advantage, making it 2-0 in the 23rd minute.
Some goalkeepers distribute the ball beautifully. Others launch counterattacks.
But Martinez, unfortunately, distributed a goal to the opposition.
And it was the sort of decision that makes a manager start mentally rewiring his entire tactical philosophy.
Mourinho’s Madrid had scored twice from defensive gifts, and the Portuguese manager was probably wondering whether Inter’s backline had accidentally received instructions to play for Madrid that night.
To Inter’s credit, they continued creating chances. Curtis Jones even struck the crossbar, while Courtois repeatedly denied the visitors.
But Madrid went into halftime leading 2-0, with Inter left wondering how such a promising start had turned into a defensive horror movie.
Courtois turns into a human cheat code
The second half was supposed to be an opportunity for Madrid to finish the job.
Instead, Los Blancos missed several chances to put the game to bed, allowing Inter to remain poised.
Mbappé had opportunities to score again, Jude Bellingham was denied, and Brahim Díaz came close. Inter goalkeeper Martínez also made several impressive saves to redeem himself after his earlier blunder.
At the other end, though, Courtois continued to frustrate Inter’s attackers.
The Belgian goalkeeper was producing the sort of performance that makes opposing forwards wonder whether the goalposts have secretly been moved closer together.
Inter kept firing. Courtois kept saving.
At some point, Inter’s players must have started wondering whether scoring against him required a special permit from UEFA.
The match statistics told the story of a remarkably open contest: Inter finished with 21 shots to Madrid’s 16, while Courtois made seven saves.
This was not exactly a quiet evening at the office.
Carlos Augusto gives Inter hope
Just when it looked as though Madrid might cruise to victory, Inter finally found a breakthrough.
In the 77th minute, Lautaro Martínez delivered a low cross, and Carlos Augusto finished to make it 2-1.
Suddenly, we had a football match again.
Inter had spent much of the evening threatening to score, and now they were only one goal away from rescuing a result. Madrid, meanwhile, had somehow transformed a comfortable two-goal lead into a situation that made many fans in the stadium want to reconsider their bets.
The final minutes became increasingly tense as Inter searched for an equalizer.
Madrid dropped deeper, Inter pushed forward, and Mourinho’s side began defending as though their lives depended on it.
Then came another enormous moment.
In the 89th minute, Courtois produced a stunning save to deny Henrikh Mkhitaryan, preserving Madrid’s advantage and leaving Inter desperately searching for another way through.
Courtois was magnificent.
If Madrid were handing out medals after the game, the goalkeeper deserved one made entirely of gold, diamonds, and tears of opposing strikers.
Mourinho gets the last laugh
The victory was particularly satisfying for Mourinho, who was facing his former club in his return to Real Madrid’s Champions League dugout.
His side had not delivered a flawless performance, and Inter certainly had enough chances to get something from the game. But Madrid’s everlasting ability to punish mistakes and Courtois’s outstanding goalkeeping ultimately proved decisive.
For Inter, it was a frustrating defeat. They created opportunities, hit the woodwork, and tested Madrid throughout the match. Unfortunately, two costly mistakes left them chasing the game, and they could not quite complete the comeback.
For Madrid, the three points were secured, although Mourinho probably would have preferred to celebrate without spending the final minutes wondering if he’d have an aneurysm.
Final verdict: Three points, several heart attacks
Real Madrid’s 2-1 victory was a perfect reminder of why the Champions League can be so enthralling.
Mbappé delivered the goals. Valverde punished a costly error. Carlos Augusto gave Inter hope. And Courtois made sure Madrid escaped with all three points.
Inter will be upset that their promising performance ended in defeat, while Madrid will be delighted with the result but aware that their defending needs some attention.
After all, you cannot expect Courtois to save absolutely everything forever.
Even superheroes need a day off.
